Oblong Butter & Cover

The Oblong Butter and Cover has an approximate height of 2⅛″, a length of 7½″ and a width of 3¼″.  All pieces can vary slightly in size, as each piece was handmade.  The butter dish comes in two pieces, with a bottom and a cover (or lid.)  It is important to note that Fostoria did produce another butter server in their American line – the Round Butter and Cover.

The Oblong Butter can be used in a variety of ways, other than for just serving butter.  If the lid is inverted (turned upside down) it can become a beautiful storage or flower box.  In fact, Fostoria Glass Company officially called the lid a “Flower Box”, and it was featured in their catalogs as such.  The inverted lid also acts as a beautiful table piece to serve individual sugar or tea packets, allowing guests to retrieve them in an orderly fashion.

Standing Butter KnifeOne butter knife that I like using with all the American butter dishes is this standing variation from Bon Vivant, purchased from Amazon.  It looks very nice sitting on the table and does not make a mess.  I personally like the fact that the knife does not rest on the glass.

3-Toed Bon Bon

Fostoria| American | 3-Toed Bon BonThe Fostoria American 3-Toed Bon Bon is approximately 7″ across.  Still relatively easy to find today, this piece was produced by the Fostoria Glass Company for many decades.  While a bon-bon is typically a sweet candy or confection dish, other food items could easily be served on this beautiful piece of crystal.

American Whitehall also made a 3-Toed Bonbon (they spelled it as one word), and it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish between the two.  One method to determine whether your dish is Fostoria or a Look-Alike is to examine the toes of the dish.  Fostoria’s toes will be smooth, with flat ground bottoms.  Their design is slightly curved, with angled toes.  Whitehall’s toes have hemispherical buttons on their bottoms; they look like tapered polygons.

While predominately made in clear crystal, the 3-Toed Bon Bon was also produced in Ruby, Amber, Blue, and Canary.

3-Toed Bowl

The 3-Toed Bowl, and its different configurations, can be somewhat confusing.  Over the years, it was made in three variations:  unfooted, without lugs – unfooted, with lugs – and footed, with lugs.  Many people today call all 3-Toed Bowls footed, which is incorrect.  All the bowls will have toes; however, only one variation will have a foot.
