Footed Bud Vase, Cupped – 8½”

Item Number:  798
Height:  8½″
Production Dates:  1948-1983

The Footed Bud Vases in the Fostoria American line came in two versions – Cupped or Flared. Both versions offered two different sizes – 6″ or 8½”. The Footed Bud Vase pictured here is the Cupped version – 8½”.

Fostoria | American | Cupped Bud VasesAfter the Fostoria Glass Company closed its doors, several moulds of the American line were then transferred over to the new owner, Lancaster Colony. Thereafter, several pieces in the Fostoria American line were produced by other glass companies, such as Dalzell-Viking, etc.   The Footed Bud Vases, Cupped or Flared, were some of the pieces that were “reproduced” by other glass factories. Slight variations in quality and/or appearance are possible when comparing a reproduced piece to an item made at the original Fostoria Glass factory.

The Cupped Bud Vases are very substantial for their size.  Both versions, the 6″ and the 8½”, are quite beautiful.  They were made for many years by the Fostoria Glass Company, and were still being produced until the early 1980’s.  The smaller 6″ size was introduced first, with the 8½” size being introduced a few years later.

Vase ~ Tall Celery

Item Number:  757
Height:  6″
Production Dates:  1915-1925 Celery; 1934-1970 Vase

The Fostoria Glass Company made a wide variety of vases in the American pattern.  From Rose Bowls to bigger and taller pieces, there were a lot of shapes and sizes in between. According to the official Fostoria catalog pages, this particular Vase was called either two things – a Vase, or a Tall Celery dish.  It debuted in the 1915 catalog as a Tall Celery and was later reintroduced as a Vase.

Some people also refer to this piece as a Straight Vase (based on its shape) or a Vertical Celery dish.  The Vase came in four different sizes – 6″, 8″, 10″ or a 12″.  The Vase | Tall Celery dish pictured in this post is 6″ high, has a base width of approximately 3¾”, and is quite substantial.  The bottom base of the Vase has a ray design.  The cube design is thick and beautifully fire-polished.

Vase – 8 Inch

Item Number:  785
Height:  8″
Production Dates:  1915-1970

Fostoria Glass Company made a wide variety of vases in the American pattern.  All of their vases, in my opinion, are quite beautiful – from the small to the large variety.  Each one, no matter the shape, is substantial in weight and durability.  Any flower or bouquet lucky enough to rest in one of these vessels will feel like Cinderella for one night.  The vases are that beautiful, especially when cleaned and cared for.

The “Vase” came in four different sizes – 6″, 8″, 10″ or a 12″.  The one pictured in this post is the 8″ size.  The 6″ Vase (also known as the Tall Celery) has a slightly smaller base, by about ¼”.  The base of the 8″ Vase is approximately 4″ in diameter.  According to the Fostoria catalogs, the top diameter measurement of the 8″ Vase is 3½”.  However, when I measured my personal collection, I found the 8″ Vase to have a slightly smaller opening than the 6″ Vase, by about 1/8″.  Herein lays the beauty of it all – since the pieces were lovingly handmade, all measurements are approximate and each piece could vary slightly.

The Fostoria American Vase – 8 Inch – also was a pioneering piece of the initial 1915 catalog debut of the American pattern. Some people also refer to these vases as “Straight Vases”, based on their shape.  This would be an easy way to differentiate them from the other vases; however, that is not their official Fostoria name.

Vase – 10 inch

Item Number:  814
Height:  10″
Production Dates:  1915-1958

Fostoria | American | Vase - 10" This is a thick vase, with incredible silkiness due to fire polishing.Fostoria Glass Company made a wide variety of vases in the American pattern.  All of their vases, in my opinion, are quite beautiful – from the small to the large variety.  This particular 10″ Vase, of which I own, is one of my most gorgeous pieces.  The glass is incredibly thick, silky smooth, and gleams with great brilliance.  It is crystal clear and magnificently made.

The “Vase” came in four different sizes – 6″, 8″, 10″ or a 12″.  The base of the 10″ Vase is approximately 4½” in diameter.  According to the Fostoria catalogs, the top opening diameter measurement is 4″ – which I found to be true when measuring my own piece. However, since all the vases were lovingly handmade, measurements are approximate and each piece could vary slightly.

Almost identical to the rarer Straw Jar bottom, the two pieces are often confused with each other.  Though made from the same mould, the Straw Jar bottom was made with a bigger opening so that it could accommodate a cover (or lid).  If one tried to put a Straw Jar Cover on a piece that was designed to be a 10″ Vase,  it would not fit.  The cover is too big.  The picture posted here is that of a 10″ Vase, which has a smaller opening in comparison to a piece designed to be a Straw Jar.

The Fostoria American Vase – 10 Inch – was a pioneering piece of the initial 1915 catalog debut of the American pattern.  It was produced by the Fostoria Glass Company until the late 1950’s, and then later reproduced by Lancaster Colony.  Some people also refer to these vases as “Straight Vases”, based on their shape.  This would be an easy way to differentiate them from the other vases; however, that is not their official Fostoria name.

Vase – 12 Inch

Item Number:  V-10
Height:  12″
Production Dates:  1915-1944

Fostoria | American | 12" VaseFostoria Glass Company made a wide variety of vases in the American pattern.  All of their vases are quite beautiful – from the small to the large variety.  The 12″ Vase is a tall and gorgeous piece.  It is definitely one of my most heaviest vases – weighing in at six (6) pounds!  When I take it to its destination, I cradle it much like a baby – ensuring it arrives safely.

The top opening diameter of the 12″ Vase is approximately 4½”.  It was a pioneering piece of the initial 1915 catalog debut of the American pattern. Production for this piece started in 1915 and ended around 1944.  Of all the four different sized vases in this style, the 12″ Vase is the tallest.

Some people also refer to these vases as “Straight Vases”, based on their shape.  This is an easy way to differentiate them from other vases; however, that is not their official Fostoria name.

Individual Shaker, Glass Top

Item Number:  SS-09
Height:  2”
Production Dates:  1938-1947

fostoria-american-individual-shaker-square-pThere were several different types of Salt and Pepper Shakers made in the Fostoria American line.  Not only were the designs different, but the tops and sizes were as well.  The piece you see here is the “Individual Shaker, Square”.  It is one of the smaller Shakers, with a Fostoria Glass Top (F.G.T.)  The Individual Shaker is between 1⅞” – 2″ high, and sits on a square bottom.

The Individual Shakers are petite in size, as their purpose was to serve salt to individuals – not the entire table.  Hence, these smaller Shakers were usually placed at each place setting on the table.  Fostoria also made larger Shakers, such as the Shaker, F.G.T. – which would be the perfect choice if you needed a bigger Salt and Pepper Shaker for the entire table.

Fostoria Glass also offered a 3-Piece Individual Shaker Set, which included an Individual Shaker Tray and two of the Individual Shakers with glass tops. This Set was also available with Individual Shakers that had silver tops.

Over the years I have found that it is still relatively easy to find these Shakers; however, finding them with the glass tops in good condition is a bit more difficult.  Many times the glass tops will be cracked, broken or in ill repair.  One has to be careful when dealing with glass tops, because too much pressure will eventually crack or break the glass.
