Footed Punch Cup

Item Number:  614
Approximate Size:  2¾″ H; 7 oz.
Production Dates:  1973-1982

The Footed Punch Cup was one of the last cups produced in the Fostoria American pattern.  At the time of its introduction, the previous punch and/or custard cups had been discontinued.  Starting in the 1970s, the Footed Punch Cup was now the one and only punch cup in the entire 2056 line.  Fostoria never described it as a coffee cup.  Put simply, it is the Footed Punch Cup.

The Footed Punch Cup is approximately 2¾″ in height.  Since the Footed Punch Cup is not as flared the Footed Cup, the top opening is about ½″ smaller in diameter.  Each cup holds approximately 7 ounces.  Out of all the cups that Fostoria produced in the American pattern, the Footed Punch Cup is probably the one that is most often identified incorrectly.

Punch Cup – Regular, Flat Handle

Item Number:  D-01
Height:  2½″
Production Dates:  Not Cataloged

Fostoria made a few different punch cups, with most differences being attributed to their handle and whether the cup was flared or regular in shape. This particular cup is the regular variation, with a flat handle.  The Punch Cup has a top band of clear glass, which can vary in height.  The top diameter of the cup is approximately 3″ (this measurement can vary slightly) and the height is approximately 2½ inches.  The Punch Cup holds about 6 ounces.

The cup is referred to as “flat-handled” because the top of the handle is flat. Some people also refer to this piece as a D-Handled Cup since the handle looks like the letter “D”.  The handle shape is different from other punch cups and coffee cups made by Fostoria Glass, which usually feature a typical round handle.

Punch/Custard Cup – Flared

Item Number:  616
Approximate Size:  2½″ H; 6 oz.
Production Dates:  1915-1970

Fostoria made a few different punch cups, with most differences being attributed to their handle and whether the cup was flared or regular in shape. This particular Fostoria American Punch/Custard Cup is the flared version, with a round handle.  It has a top band of clear glass about ¾″ high. The cup’s height is approximately 2½″, with a flat bottom.  Because of the flared design – the top diameter is approximately 3½″, which is larger than the regular version.  The cup’s capacity is roughly 6 ounces.

Like the Regular Punch (Custard) Cup, it was also one of the first cups introduced in the American pattern.  In fact, it is featured in the original 1915 Fostoria American catalog.  When introduced, Fostoria Glass Company referred to it as a “Custard” Cup, not a Punch Cup.  It was not until many years later that Fostoria Glass started referring to it as their Flared Punch Cup.  One must remember, that as the times changed … so did people’s cooking and eating habits.  Fostoria Glass would sometimes add or delete items, or change their respective names, to reflect the current trends in the market.

For me, this particular piece of glass is special … as it was one of the first cups introduced in the American pattern.  In fact, it is featured in the original 1915 Fostoria American catalog.  When introduced, Fostoria Glass Company referred to it as a “Custard” cup, not a Punch Cup.  It was not until many years later that Fostoria Glass started referring to it as their Regular Punch Cup.  One must remember, that as the times changed … so did people’s cooking and eating habits.  Fostoria Glass would sometimes add or delete items, or change their respective names, to reflect the current trends in the market.

Punch Cup – Flared, Flat Handle

Item Number:  D-02
Height:  2¼″
Production Dates:  Not Cataloged

It is important to note that the flared Punch Cups, with flat handles, can vary slightly in size.  The one shown in this post is the bigger one, with a top diameter of approximately 3½ inches.  The height of the Punch Cup is approximately 2¼″, with a flat bottom.  Other size variations (up to about ¼″) might also be found in the height of the clear band of glass around the top of the cup.  The Punch Cup holds about 6 ounces.

This Punch Cup is referenced as “flat-handled” because the top of the handle is flat.  This characteristic is different from other punch cups and coffee cups made by Fostoria Glass, which featured a typical round handle.
