American Whitehall Salt & Pepper Shakers

Description:  Salt & Pepper Shakers
Approximate Height:  3½”
Pattern:  American Whitehall
Colors:  Clear Crystal, Peach

The Salt & Peppers in the American Whitehall line were mainly produced in clear crystal.  When they introduced their Peach Collection, the Salt & Pepper was included in that assembly.  The peach color is the only colored Salt & Pepper that was made.  Some folks refer to this color as pink; however, it’s true description and color from Indiana Glass is “Peach”.

American Whitehall Oval Bowl

Oval Description:  Oval Bowl
Approximate Size:  10″ x 7″
Pattern:  American Whitehall
Colors:  Clear Crystal, Evergreen

This is one of the pieces in the Whitehall line that is often confused with the Fostoria American Oval Vegetable Dish, Item #836.  Any easy way to distinguish between the two is to look at the bottom of each dish.  The Fostoria American Oval Vegetable Dish has twenty-four rays, whereas the American Whitehall Oval Bowl has twenty rays (or petals) in their bottom design.

American Whitehall Salad/Fruit Bowl

Description:  Salad/Fruit Bowl
Approximate Diameter:  9½″
Pattern:  American Whitehall
Colors:  Clear Crystal, Peach

Measurements are approximate and might vary due to mould changes or quality of craftsmanship over the years.  The larger Salad/Fruit Bowl is a great accompanying piece for the smaller Individual Salad Bowls.  These five pieces make a wonderful serving set for serving salad or fruit.

The Peach Collection also offered this larger 9½” Salad/Fruit Bowl, along with the smaller 5″ Individual Salad Bowls.  All of these bowls – both the Salad/Fruit Bowls and the Individual Salad Bowls – were produced by Indiana Glass Company under the American Whitehall label.

Torte Plate – 14″

Item Number:  567
Approximate Size:  14″ D
Production Dates:  1933-1982

14" Ruby Torte PlateThe Fostoria Glass Company produced several Torte Plates – all in various sizes.  Unlike the Oval Torte Plates, the regular Torte Plates have a round or circular shape.  The one pictured in this post is the smallest Torte Plate, which is 14″ in circumference.  Four Torte Plates with different sizes were produced – 14″, 18″, 20″, and 24″ (the largest is considered rare).

In later years, Dalzell Viking offered the plates in an assortment of colors – Ruby, Cranberry Mist, Blue Gray, and Plum.  The colored pieces are harder to find, due to demand and limited production.

Oval Torte Plate

Item Number:  564
Approximate Size:  13½″ L
Production Dates:  1939-1973

Fostoria | American | Oval Torte Plate and Vegetable BowlIn addition to a variety of dinnerware and accessories, Fostoria Glass also produced Tortes, Trays, and Platters in the American pattern.  The Oval Torte Plate is one such example.  It has a beautiful elongated shape, and measures between 13½″ to 14″ in length.  The Oval Torte Plate was produced from 1939-1973.

The mould of the Oval Vegetable Bowl was used in the making of the Oval Torte Plate.  Since the genesis of the plate came from the mould of the bowl, the two pieces will be similar in design – yet different in shape.  In order to make plates from the bowl mould, Fostoria workers flattened the glass.  The Oval Torte Plates had two variations – a plain center, and a center with rays (the same is true for the bowls).  The first and more common variation is the plain center – void of any design.  The latter variation is the one with rays on the bottom, and is considered more rare.

As displayed in this picture, the Oval Vegetable Bowl is sitting directly on top of the Oval Torte Plate.  It is quite obvious that they came from the same mould, with their center bottoms matching perfectly.

The Oval Torte Plate is substantial in weight and function.  As an eBay Partner, I may be compensated if you make a purchase on eBay.  The following link shows available Oval Torte Plates on eBay.

American Whitehall Butter/Cover

Description: Butter/Cover Set
Approximate Height: 2½”
Pattern: American Whitehall
Colors:  Clear Crystal, Peach

The American Whitehall Butter and Cover is very similar to the Fostoria American Oblong Butter.  Like most things; however, there are differences.  The easiest way to tell the difference between the two is to look closely at the Cover and bottom piece. The FA Cover will have 4 rows of cubes on the top; the AW Cover will have 3 rows. The FA bottom piece does not have a rayed center; the AW butter bottom will have a rayed center.

Peach color = AW.  The Peach Butter/Cover Set will be added to the gallery in the future.
