Square Salver

Item Number:  631
Width:  10″
Production Dates:  1924-1982

Fostoria | American | Square Salver. One of the most beautiful Cake Servers ever produced. The Fostoria American Square Salver is a very impressive piece of glass. While most people today call this piece a “Cake Stand”, Fostoria called it a “Salver” – which simply means a tray that was especially made for serving food or beverages.  Fostoria produced two Salvers – the square one you see pictured here, and the beautiful Round Salver.  Other cake stands and/or servers were also made.

The Square Salver is approximately 10″ in width, with a height of about 7¼”. When the two Salvers were produced, Fostoria Glass Company put a higher price tag on the Square Salver. Most of the time, but not always, it is more expensive to buy in today’s market than the Round Salver. The Round Salver was introduced first, around 1916.  A few years later, the Square Salver was introduced.  Both were kept in the production line until approximately 1982.

Footed Cake Stand

Item Number:  639-CS
Diameter:  10½″
Production Dates:  1978-1983

While the bigger cake servers in the American pattern had official names such as “Salver”, Fostoria Glass Company simply called this piece a “Cake Stand”.  It is approximately 10½” in diameter, and about 4″ high.  Though not as big as it’s siblings, it is still a beautiful and elegant cake server.

While this Cake Stand was produced in the latter part of Fostoria’s reign, as such – it had a shorter production life.  It is slightly lighter in weight (though still heavy) than the Round and Square Salvers, and it bears a different design on the plate’s edge.  The edges flow upward, with graceful curves or points.  Another difference worth pointing out is that this piece does not have an indentation (or “well”) in the center glass.

The Fostoria American Cake stand is definitely a beautiful and wonderful piece, and would be a lovely asset to have in your American collection.  If interested in purchasing a Fostoria American Cake Server, please click on the following sponsored link for available Cake Stands on eBay.

Round Salver

Item Number:  630
Diameter:  10″
Production Dates:  1916-1982

The Fostoria American 10″ Round Salver is a thing of beauty.  Most people simply refer to it as a Cake Plate; however, Fostoria Glass Company called it their 10-in. Round Salver.  Fostoria also made a Square Salver; however, it is the round version that had a longer production life and is usually easier to find.  Both versions are equally gorgeous.

This piece of Fostoria glass is heavy and substantial.  Indeed, it is no light-weight and weighs in at 5 lbs.  It is about 10″ in diameter, with an approximate height of 7¼”. Made for many years, it’s production ended in the early 1980’s.  Afterwards, Fostoria produced the Footed Cake Stand – which was smaller and less expensive.
